Why You Should Not go to an Automatic Car Wash, Even the Touchless Ones

Automatic car washes are cheap and convenient, there is no denying that. However, if you care about your most delicate investment then going to an automatic car wash could quickly ruin your vehicles finish.

Standard Automatic Car Washes

To the untrained eye a automatic car wash looks like it will do a good job cleaning your vehicle. While it does remove a lot of the dirt of your vehicle it comes at an expensive cost.

The large, fast spinning brushes carry small rocks, debris, and contaminates from all previous vehicles it has touched. These hard rocks are being propelled into your paint, creating millions of scratches in a swirl pattern. This pattern of scratches is visible from all angles, and requires extensive paint correction to repair.

While you saved money by going to the automatic car wash, you now have to spend hundreds to thousands in labor intensive paint correction, sometimes require your vehicle to be wet sanded. Unless you do not care about extensively scratching your paint, stay clear of these type of car washes.

Touchless Automatic Car Washes

These types of car washes remove the large spinning brushes that are known for scratching paint, and instead wash your vehicle with just soap and water.

While this is a safer alternative, your paint will never be fully clean as the chemicals cannot fully remove bonded dirt and contaminates. Additionally, in order for these automatic car washes to clean your paint without physical agitation they require the use of harsh soaps. These soaps remove or weaken any protection you have on your paint significantly, such as waxes or sealants.

While they do apply some protection to your vehicles paint after, it is usually subpar. The waxes used by automatic car washes will not bond to your vehicles paint because the paint is not fully clean.

Additionally, the waxes used are of subpar quality and will not last longer than a week or two, while high quality waxes can last up to a year on properly cleaned vehicles. This not only protects the paint longer and more effectively but also keeps the vehicles appearance looking good for months.

Detailers Vs. Car Washes

In short, the difference between a Detailer and a Car Wash is that Detailers care about your vehicle, using techniques, products, and experience to wash and clean your car safely and effectively.

Car washes on the other hand only care about washing your car for cheap, and will use subpar techniques and products to quickly wash your vehicle without caring about damaging and scratching your vehicle.
